FAIL SAFE ACTUATOR
TiNi’s Fail Safe Actuators have many applications, but are fundamentally born out of the need to push or pull an appendage, in case something goes wrong in a critical component. These actuators are characterized by having relatively low-force, high-stroke, and their ability to maintain position without the application of power.
TiNi’s Ejector Release Mechanism (ERM) is a uniquely simple and effective device which offers both high load holding capability and fast actuation time. The Actuator “Coupler” acts as a detachable Nut and may be used to support and release loads up to 4000 lbf.
TiNi’s Frangibolt actuators are a simple and effective way to support and release loads up to 20,000 lbf. The principle of operation is simple: A Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) cylinder elongates to fracture a bolt or stud thereby achieving separation of two or more components. Standard Fastener sizes range from # 8 size screws to ¾” bolts.
TiNi’s Pinpullers are fast acting and suitable for a variety of Aerospace applications. Pin retraction is achieved by coupling the recovery characteristics of Shape Memory Alloys with TiNi’s patented trigger mechanism. Pinpuller pull force ranges from 5 to 1000 lbf with five standard sizes offered as COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) items.
TiNi’s Micro Latch was developed specifically for “New Space” applications such as the hold-down and release of Cubesats. It is small, fast acting, and a cost effective way to support and release loads up to 100 lbf.
TiNi’s Cryogenic Valve uses a high force piston that is operable at pressures up to 10,000 psi. This may be configured in either a “Normally Open” or “Normally Closed” embodiment. The sealing mechanism is designed to operate with both gas or liquid at temperatures down to -200 degrees Celsius.
TiNi’s Optical Shutter was first developed for SWRi (South West Research Institute) for the New Horizons mission to Pluto. It provides a simple and effective means to let light into sensitive instruments. The aperture cover is opened on command and may be manually reset to support ground testing.
TiNi’s Frangivalve is a normally closed isolation valve that is capable of supporting pressures up to 10,000 psi. It is hermetically sealed using an all stainless steel valve body. Actuation is achieved by using a Frangibolt Actuator to break an internal membrane which bridges the inlet hole to the outlet port. The design is inherently scalable and available in a variety of sizes and flow rates.
TiNi’s Cable Cutter uses powerful Bellville springs in conjunction with a specially designed blade and anvil to sever high strength Stainless Steel cables. This is an effective means to release payloads in emergency applications such as Search & Rescue. As with all TiNi products, it is fully resettable and available in a variety of sizes and embodiments.
TiNi’s Thermal Trigger may be used in a variety of fire safety applications. The enabling technology is the use of TiNi’s SCSMA (Single Crystal Shape Memory Alloy) material which makes it possible to set the trigger temperature at much higher values than is possible with commercially available SMAs.
TiNi’s Auto Resetable Pinpullers were born out of space constrained applications where the Actuator is buried deep within a complex instrument. This makes it difficult or impossible to perform a manual reset. Auto reset is achieved by incorporating a secondary SMA actuator which can re-extend the Pin on command and yet not interfere with normal actuation. This is done using a custom flexure made from our patented SCSMA material.
LAUNCH LOCK ACTUATOR
TiNi’s Launch Lock Actuator was originally nicknamed as, “The Jack” for the basic function that it provides. It uses an array of SCSMA cylinders (much like bullets in a revolver) to provide forces up to 50,000 lbf and displacements up to 0.25 in. The work output is greater than any non-pyrotechnic Actuator on the market.
TiNi’s mini Frangibolt is based on a #4 size screw and we believe is the smallest, simplest, and most powerful Actuator (considering its size) available in the world today. Once again, the enabling technology is our SCSMA material which provides 3x the stroke of commercially available SMAs. TiNi has been manufacturing these FD04 size Actuators for Cubesat and other applications since 2005 and can readily scale production to meet commercial demand.
TiNi’s Separation Link is similar to the “Sep Nut” concept, however it is designed to release a Tie Down link using Arms which swing out of the way upon application of power. This device leverages our ERM through a simple linkage to amplify the force capability by an order of magnitude. The embodiment shown is capable of 10,000 lbf and currently under qualification.
SUBSEA EJECTOR (ERM)
TiNi’s Subsea Ejector Release Mechanism (ERM) includes a Pressure Balanced and Oil Filled (PBOF) enclosure such that it can operate directly in Sea water at high pressure. It has been successfully used in many deep ocean applications to deploy critical instruments from various manned and unmanned submarines.
TiNi’s Shackle Release was developed for Subsea rigging applications which require support and release of critical payloads remotely. The release function is achieved by using one of TiNi’s subsea Frangibolts coupled to powerful jaws which provide a leveraging mechanism much like a pair of pliers. Scalable design allows hold down and release of loads in excess of 100,000 lbf.
TiNi’s Separation Nut works on the basis of a traditional segmented nut which is made to separate on command to release a tie down bolt. TiNi’s mechanism, however, is fully reusable and field resettable and uses two independent TiNi Pinpullers as the means for actuation to offer the utmost in redundancy and reliability.
TiNi’s Subsea Frangibolts use a polyurethane outer jacket and sealed cable such that they may be used directly in sea water and at very high pressure. As in space applications, the Frangibolt offers a uniquely simple and effective means to release deployables remotely in hostile environments. Standard size Actuators are available for bolts up to ½” which can support and release loads in excess of 10,000 lbf.
TiNi’s 2 Way Actuator is used as a generic means to push and pull an output Pin in opposite directions. This may be used for functions ranging from Optical Shutters which can Open and Close on demand, to Fail Safe Actuators that require input to enable (or disable) a mechanical system.
TiNi’s Subsea Pinpullers have been used in many oceanic projects. Typical applications include deployment of ballasts, buoys, cables, and other items from a wide array of AUVs. Much like our ERMs they include a Pressure Balanced and Oil Filled (PBOF) enclosure such that they can be used directly in sea water at high pressure.
TiNi’s Cable Release Device was developed jointly with our partner company in Japan (Wel Research). The device uses a TiNi standard Pinpuller which is coupled to a swing arm mechanism that provides a significant gain in the hold down and release force. This can be configured to work with a single cable termination point, or dual as shown.
TiNi’s SMA Cylinder (Pipe Actuator) was developed for a remote Down Hole application for the oil and gas industry. The project required high actuation force in an environment that could reach very high temperature’s (150C). TiNi was successful in developing an SMA Actuator that mimics a hydraulic cylinder, but one that could be powered electrically rather than using complicated mechanical systems.
TiNi’s Pinpusher is yet another derivative of our Pinpuller technology. The embodiment shown has a relatively narrow body diameter and long Pin stroke. It also incorporates custom electrical switches which were designed to provide both a shut off function as well as telemetry.
FAIL SAFE ACTUATOR
TiNi FS04-5 Fail Safe actuator was jointly developed by TiNi Aerospace and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena CA) to be used as part of the rotating calibration mirror mechanism of the MIRO instrument. This flew on the historic flight to Comet 67 aboard the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft. The unit incorporates redundant Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires as the means to de-couple the Aperture Cover Window from the drive mechanism in the event of a motor failure.
SCSMA raw materials and components are routinely manufactured to support R&D projects. Basic “as drawn” forms include wire, leaf, tube and rod. These may be subsequently machined into more complicated shapes that provide a broad range of functions. These are available in small manufacturing lots with a transition temperature ranging from -150C to +200C.
TiNi Rotary Actuators operate on the same basic principal as our Pinpullers. However, the TiNi trigger is used to release energy stored in a preloaded Torque Spring (rather than Compression). Output Torque and Angle are scalable but typically extend up to 15 in-lb (1.6 Nm) and 180 degrees, respectively.
SMA RETAINING RING
TiNi’s “Releasable Retaining Ring” was an early prototype demonstrating how SMAs can be used in fire safety applications. In this case, a Shape Memory Alloy extension spring was used to detach a high force Retaining Ring thereby disabling critical munitions system.
CUT & RELEASE
TiNi’s Cut & Release Actuator was developed for a unique subsea application where a Fiber Optic cable assembly needed to be Cut & Released, on command. This was done by using two of our P50 Pinpullers in an orthogonal fashion to minimize mounting footprint. The custom developed interface included special adapters that provided both the Cutting and Release functions.
